These professionals claim that all those who have completed the specialty of health biology, or a specific masters of two years in the same field, are recognized as health professionals
The General Council of Official Colleges of Biologists of Spain has asked the central government to amend the Law on Health Professions (LOPS) to include biologists working in the field of genetics, human reproduction or forensic field, Since this group is not considered a health professional. Only those who have passed the BIR, that is, the resident internal biologist exam, similar to the MIR of Medicine, are included. This means, say those affected, not being able to access the career, or that their work is always subject to another degree. In Galicia, says the dean of the Galician school of biologists, José Pelayo Míguez, there are hundreds of graduates in this situation, between 200 and 300, he calculates, although the claim is identical throughout the state.
What these professionals demand is that all those who have completed the specialty of sanitary biology, or a specific masters of two years in the same field, are recognized as health professionals as it is with other degrees. And, they defend, more than 80% of the members of numerous genetic or forensic research groups have this training and work in the field of health.
Biologists regret the defenseless situation in which this profession is found, especially after repealing the royal decree that allowed to obtain the health specialty of genetics, and that would enable the students who opted for this branch to be considered sanitary.
The schools of biologists regret that the doors are closed to biology professionals so they can contribute to the National Health System. The representatives of this group will hold a meeting in September in Madrid to address this claim.
